Artists Nina Chanel Abney revitalizes the classic UN game with its distinctive fragmented figures and bold blocks of color a new collaboration with Mattel. In contrast to the minimal numbered cards, lively portraits and mirrored personas characterize the transformed deck. Just like her larger work, Abney’s design is energetic and captures the wildly chaotic experience of modern life.
“I wanted the cards to have personality,” says Abney. “UNO can be such an emotional game. I thought it would be fun to make cards that speak for themselves and get even more reactions from the players than they already are.”
The New York-based artist who currently resides in New York is only the third creator of the UNO Artiste Series, which launched in 2019 and was previously the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. In addition to changing the deck aesthetically, Abney also changed the principles of playing with a WILD NO. “If someone plays a card with Draw 2 or Wild Draw 4 on you, discard that card to force them to draw the cards instead,” the artist continues Instagram.
Abney’s deck just released this week and is available for pre-order Mattel’s store. As part of the collaboration, the toy company will also make a donation to Pharrell Williams. Black ambition, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping black and Latin American entrepreneurs.
