The Knicks and Pistons agreed to the deal on Sunday afternoon after regular talks that spanned a few months. The selection for the second round 2021 – taken from New York in 2018 for Willy Hernangomez – is likely to be in the 1940s range, which is forecast to be a deep overall draft.
Rose returns to the Knicks, where he spent a tumultuous 2016-17 season fighting in the Triangle during the Phil Jackson regime. Rose was the youngest MVP in league history under Thibodeau with the Chicago Bulls in 2011 and played again for him with Minnesota in the 2017-18 season.
In his first season as coach under Thibodeau, the Knicks experienced a competitive upswing and became the defensive team with the number 6 in the NBA (107.9 points per 100). Rose’s arrival brings aid to the NBA’s 25th-rated offensive team (106.9 points per 100 possessions) and leads to an overlap of veteran guards, including starters Elfrid Payton and Austin Rivers.
Rivers is likely to become a player competitors look for in trade talks as the teams attempt to peg the back seats closer to the March 25 trading deadline.
Check out the highlights of the new Knicks guard Derrick Rose, who drives from Detroit to New York.
The pistons are moving in the direction of rebuilding, trying to find a target for Rose that appealed to him. The 32-year-old Rose averaged 14 points and four assists at 42% shooting this season. He is in the final year of a contract that pays him $ 7.7 million and becomes a free agent in the off-season.
For Detroit, Smith – number 9 in the 2017 draft – is seen as a reclamation project similar to Forward’s Josh Jacksonwho signed with the pistons in free hand. Smith, 23, recently volunteered for the G League in Orlando to find time to play.
