What starts as a quiet clip from America’s most famous TV painting teacher Bob Ross of his Joy in painting The show suddenly morphs into a frenetic and extremely rare behind the scenes video with Banksy creating his latest work in Reading, Berkshire. With the title “Create an escapeThe clip has just been released on the artist’s social media channels and shows the real-time creation of a stenciled artwork of a prisoner escaping the tall red brick walls of HM Prison Reading (formerly known as Reading Gaol). In contrast to the bright studio lights that illuminated Ross’ bucolic landscapes, “Create Escape” captures the hectic yet precise execution of a work done in the dark by an artist entirely dictated by the police’s response time.

The sprawling and pristine prison wall was a daring and perfect location for a Banksy piece. It is best known for its most famous inmate: Oscar Wilde spent two years in prison from 1895 to 1897 for “gross indecency” for being gay. The work clearly pays homage to the poet, as the escape mechanism appears to be a long strand of paper emerging from a typewriter in place of the usual sheets. Wilde reported in the poem “Aspects of his imprisonment”.The ballad of the reading prison, “Which mainly focuses on the execution of Charles Thomas Wooldridge.
